Mathematics

At Kardinya Primary School, we deliver a purposeful and engaging mathematics program designed to build deep understanding, confidence, and a love of learning. Our approach aligns with the Western Australian Curriculum and is centred on developing strong numerical vocabulary, conceptual understanding, fluency, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving skills in every student.

Daily Reviews for Strong Foundations

Daily Reviews are embedded in every mathematics lesson across the school. These short, structured sessions revisit previously taught content to strengthen retention, reduce cognitive load, and build automaticity. This ensures students keep essential skills current, helping them make meaningful connections as new concepts are introduced.

Explicit Teaching with Clear Learning Intentions

Every lesson follows a consistent numeracy block that incorporates explicit teaching supported by clearly communicated Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. By knowing what they are learning and what success looks like, students remain focused, confident, and motivated. Instruction is sequenced deliberately to move from modelled learning, to guided practice, and finally to independent application.

Differentiation to Support and Extend Every Student

We recognise that students learn at different paces and in different ways. Differentiated challenges are embedded in our lesson design to allow students to work at a level that is accessible yet appropriately challenging. This approach encourages students to take ownership of their learning while ensuring teachers can extend high achievers and support those who need additional scaffolding.

Hands-On Learning and Conceptual Understanding

Manipulatives and hands-on materials are a key part of our mathematics instruction. Students learn by doing: exploring, modelling, building, and experimenting with mathematical ideas. This strengthens their conceptual understanding, making abstract ideas more concrete and meaningful.

Consistent, Evidence-Based Practice

Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning and work closely within their cohorts to maintain a guaranteed and viable mathematics curriculum. Regular walkthroughs, shared resources, and collaboratively developed planners ensure consistency of high-quality instruction across all year levels.
